Sigiriya

Sigiriya is located in Matale district, Sri Lanka. This place is well known and so popular among the tourists in Sri Lanka.

Sigiriya has a great history which runs back to the royal times of Sri Lanka. The king Kashyapa chose this site as his capital and built his palace on the top of this massive rock which is now called as Sigiriya. It is about 200 meters high and reflects the advanced architectural and engineering skills of ancient Sri Lanka.

Here you can encounter a number of attractions that would catch your eyes for certain. Gateway with the giant structure of a lion, frescoes, summit of the rock with the ruins of the palace, mirror wall, royal and water gardens are some of them.
You can find the ruins of the enormous lion structure on a small plateau about halfway up the rock. This significant construction is the reason for the name Sigiriya.

On the way up to the summit you can spot beautiful frescoes on the sides of the rock.

It is said that in old days the mirror wall was polished thoroughly so that the king could see his reflection in it. But now, it is painted with inscriptions and poems written by visitors to Sigiriya. However today, painting or writing on the wall is  strictly prohibited.
And the next ones are royal and water gardens. It is better to climb the rock 1st, explore the palace, see the frescoes along the way on the return and then once you are on the ground wander the gardens.
And the most enchanting experience you can get here is the fabulous views on the way up and from the top of the rock. I swear to you, if you are a traveler this view is a must in your gallery.

Locals refer this site as eighth wonder of the world and it is also among the UNESCO listed world heritage sites. So it is highly important to protect the site, specially not to write on or do any harm to the walls.
So if you plan to visit Sri Lanka, just do not miss the place!!!
